How to run this board

Hanukkah is often squeezed into a single slide of a December holidays unit, and this board gives it a full class period. Categories cover the story of the Maccabees and the rededicated Temple, the menorah and how it is lit, festival foods fried in oil, the dreidel and gelt, the Hebrew words worth knowing, and the customs of the eight nights.

The Dreidel and Gelt column plays well with a real dreidel on the desk: spin once before each clue in that column and let the letter decide who reads it. The Final asks about a two-thousand-year-old argument over how to light the candles, which is a good way to show students that traditions have reasons behind them.
