How to run this board

This board treats Valentine's Day as a day about friendship: acts of kindness, what makes a good friend, the colors and symbols of the holiday, candy and cards, and a few February facts like Groundhog Day and the shortest month. There is nothing romantic on it, so it works from kindergarten up.

Play it during the class party while cards are being passed out, or right after, when students are too excited for regular work. Pairing an older reader with a younger student on each team helps in mixed-grade rooms.

A kind house rule: before a team scores, they have to say one nice thing about another team. It is silly, it takes five seconds, and it fits the day.
